Frequently Asked Questions about bedbugs

Please reach us at paul@seatoskypest.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Bedbugs are small, flat, oval insects that are usually brownish-red and about the size of an apple seed. They become more swollen and red after feeding.

Signs of bedbugs include bites on your skin, small blood stains on your sheets, dark spots (fecal matter) on your mattress, and the presence of shed skins.

Bedbugs can be brought into your home through used furniture, luggage, clothing, or other personal items. They are commonly found in places with high turnover, like hotels.

If chemicals are used incorrectly, bedbugs can go into hiding and become more difficult and costly to remove. Contact Sea to Sky Pest Elimination for a free inspection and quote.

You'll get a preparation list before treatment, which includes things such as bagging up, washing and disposing of items.

Depending on circumstances, you will likely need to be out of the house for about 4 hours. This includes pets.

Avoid clutter, inspect second hand items, inspect your luggage after travel, inspect before moving into a new home.

Identifying Bedbugs

Physical Characteristics

Physical Characteristics

Physical Characteristics

  • They are visible to the naked eye
  • Adult bed bugs are usually brown in colour. When filled with blood, their colour ranges from red to dark brown
  • They are oval in shape and about the size of a flattened apple seed, 4 to 7 mm in length
  • They neither jump nor fly
  • They move at the speed of an ant
  • They have a lifespan of 5 to 6 months. However, they can live more than a year without feeding when in a dormant state

Before and After Feeding

Physical Characteristics

Physical Characteristics

Bed bugs can look somewhat different depending on their feeding status. If an adult bed bug has not fed recently, it is approximately 3 ⁄16" long and oval in shape. In fact, an unfed bed bug can look like a flat disc. However, once it takes a blood meal the body blows up like a balloon. The bed bug elongates so that it looks more like a torpedo than a disc. The color also will be a bright red if the bed bug has fed within the last couple of hours. The bed bug will darken and flatten again over the next couple of days as it digests the blood meal.

How to Find Them

Physical Characteristics

Bedbug Eggs & Nymphs

  • Bed bugs are most active at night.
  • They mainly live in bedrooms.
  • They avoid light, seeking shelter in dark, narrow and inaccessible places.
  • Small black spots on sheets, mattresses or bedsprings. These spots come from bed bug excrements;
  • Presence of live or dead bed bugs, shed skin or eggs near the sleeper. These traces can be found on the bed or near it
