Reliable Pest Control Services for Your Home

Carpet Beetles

Carpet beetles are pests that can damage fabrics, furs, and other materials in homes, museums, and warehouses. Here are some things to know about carpet beetles:

  • Appearance Adult carpet beetles are small, oval-shaped, and range in color from black to mottled patterns of white, brown, yellow, and orange. The larvae are tiny, hairy worms that are tear-drop shaped and covered with light brown hairs.
  • Damage The larvae are responsible for damaging fabrics, furs, feathers, and other animal fibers. Carpet beetle damage is often mistaken for that of clothes moths, but carpet beetle damage usually occurs in a large area or a portion of the garment or carpet.
  • Life cycle Carpet beetles pass through four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The larval stage can last from 70 days to more than a year, depending on the species, temperature, and food availability.
  • Eggs Female carpet beetles lay 40–90 eggs that hatch into larvae in one to two weeks. The eggs are white or cream in color, oval-shaped, and measure 1/4 to 1/2 mm in length.
  • Control To reduce the number of carpet beetles, you can:
    • Dust and vacuum carpets, furniture, and pantry shelves regularly
    • Store attractive items in sealed, airtight containers
    • Check flowers and used furniture for carpet beetles before bringing them into your home
    • Sprinkle diatomaceous earth or boric acid anywhere you see signs of carpet beetles
    • Launder bedsheets, clothing, and other fabrics with the hottest washing and drying settings

Clothing Moths

Clothing moths are small, wingless insects that eat animal fibers and can cause damage to textiles and other materials:

  • Appearance Clothes moths are about 1/4 to 1/2 inch long, with narrow wings and small hairs. They are beige or buff in color, with reddish-gold to coppery hairs on their heads.
  • Behavior Clothes moths are weak fliers that avoid light and hide in dark, undisturbed areas. They are attracted to the smell of woolens and prefer items stained with sweat, food, or urine.
  • Life cycle Clothes moths go through four life stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The adult moths live for two to four weeks and do not feed. The larvae feed on animal fibers, such as wool, fur, silk, feathers, felt, and leather.
  • Damage Damage from clothes moths appears as thinner areas or holes in the fabric. Fur items may have exposed areas of the hide where the larvae have clipped the hairs.
  • Prevention To prevent clothes moths, you can:
    • Inspect used clothes, rugs, and furniture for larvae and damage
    • Wash clothes in hot water or have them dry-cleaned before storing them
    • Store items in airtight bags and containers
    • Keep storage areas clean of dust, cobwebs, and pet hair

Indian Meal Moths

The Indianmeal moth is a common pest of stored grains. The larvae of this species have the ability to bite through plastic and cardboard so even sealed containers may be infested. Once found, the moths are difficult to eradicate. In addition to food sources, this species can reproduce and pupate on clothing and any source of clothing must be inspected to prevent reinfestation.
